In Vassena, from the hamlet of Castolo, you take path no. 18 (white and red trail marker) which, after crossing the Varcio valley, passes by the Castolo wayside chapel dedicated to Our Lady of Sorrows.
The path then continues through the woods up to a turn-off on the right (unmarked) that leads to the Sumpiazzo chapel: a very panoramic spot with a view over the lake from Lecco to Bellagio and of the Grigna.
Returning to the junction, you continue towards Civenna along a path that is not always clear and has been disturbed by recent excavations, which make the trail harder to follow.
You ignore a dirt road that climbs to the left, cross several fenced areas with gates and, near a stable, you meet path no. 2, which you follow northwards (to the right) as far as Gorla / Civenna 2.
From here, along the asphalt road and turning left twice, you reach the provincial road, which you cross and then continue uphill along Via Marrazzi and, on the right, Via Orobi; 50 metres before the end of the street you take a road to the left, which is paved in the first section and then becomes a dirt track.
After 200 metres you find a group of farmhouses; you continue across large meadows, reach another group of houses and from there descend to Villa Mora (white-red marker, Comunità Montana).
You then climb up again towards Cascina Giacca (where there is a painting depicting a Black Madonna) and Baita Giacinta.
At the junction before Baita Giacinta, you take path no. 1 towards Campo, passing in front of the Gallo Rosso farmhouse (agriturismo).
Before the houses of Campo, in a panoramic area overlooking the lake and the surrounding mountains, you cross a meadow on the right and take the mule track, which then turns into a road and descends to Civenna.
You cross the road and, passing beside the parish church, keep to the right along the road leading to the locality of Palembri, where the mule track that returns to Vassena begins.
In Vassena, from the hamlet of Castolo, you go up along the mule track (path no. 16) that leads to Civenna, in the locality of Palembri.
Then, once you reach the Parish Church, you cross the road and walk uphill towards Cascina Giacinta.
From Cascina Giacinta (820 m, signpost with white/red markers, spring), you take the level path which, passing near Pietra Luna, reaches the Sasso di Lentina, the largest erratic boulder in the area (spring).
From the Sasso di Lentina, you descend into the wood and after 5 minutes you come to a small hill where there is the table known as the “Duchess’s Table” (Round Table).
Returning to the Sasso di Lentina, you go up along the asphalt road towards Piano Rancio; once you reach the roundabout, you turn left and, behind the Enel cabin, you follow Via Martinit.
At the end of the street you meet another asphalt road, which you follow to the left for 50 metres.
From here starts the mule track to the Menaresta spring, where the River Lambro rises (signpost), at 942 m.
About 50 metres from the spring, on the left and accessible via a footbridge, there is a cave called the Buco della Pecora.
Continuing downhill along the mule track, you arrive in the locality of Castagneti; from here, taking the Spreafico staircase, you reach Magreglio.
Once near the Sanctuary of the Madonna del Ghisallo, you go down into the meadow below and pass the bar at the entrance to the Cyclist Museum, reaching a path in the woods that shortly leads to the Alpetto campsite.
You cross the campsite to the exit, where you take path no. 14 to Vassena.
In about 10 minutes you arrive at a junction near some houses; you ignore path no. 5, which continues straight ahead, and go down to the left for about ten metres.
Here you must be very careful: you have to cross the stream and move to the left bank (when descending), then follow the hedge until you reach the path below it, which enters the wood.
You go down for about 15 minutes until you reach the mule track that will take you back to Vassena.
We start from Onno and reach the rockfall protection wall behind the historic centre, where there is a sign indicating the various routes.
We will follow path no. 5. At the end of the wall, we take Via Val Ferrera and, keeping left at the first two forks, we reach a third junction. Here, instead of turning left towards path no. 7 to Conca di Crezzo, we continue straight ahead.
Alternating some uphill stretches with flat sections, we reach the Vassena Valley. After crossing it, in order not to lose the faint trail, we must stay close to the rock face above us.
The trail now begins to climb more decisively and, despite the modest elevation gain covered so far, a splendid view opens up over Onno and its beaches, the lake, and the Grigne mountains.
After passing a small spring known as “Funtanen”, we enter the woods.
In about one hour of walking from the start, we arrive at the “Furnaseta”, where the remains of a small charcoal furnace are still visible.
At this point, it is possible to take a left deviation along the panoramic path no. 6, which crosses the base of the “Castel de Leves” and reaches Conca di Crezzo (this section is recommended only for experienced hikers due to some exposed stretches without protection).
Our route continues along path no. 5.
From the sign marked “Furnaseta”, placed on a large granite boulder, we move rightwards (towards the mountain) for about 30 metres and take a small trail that climbs for around 10 minutes, then continues on level ground through chestnut woods until reaching some houses.
Before these houses we meet path no. 14 Vassena – Magreglio.
We follow it uphill and, after crossing the Alpetto campsite, we reach the Sanctuary of the Madonna del Ghisallo (2 hours and 30 minutes from the start).
Return. For the return route, we follow path no. 14 back to the junction with path no. 5, where particular attention is needed to take the correct direction.
After passing the last house, we move to the left side of the stream (when descending) and skirt the garden bordered by a hedge until we reach its lower side.
Here begins a path that descends through a dense mixed woodland and joins the cobbled mule track leading to the hamlet of Vassena.
